Princess Diana

While one could assume juggling motherhood, a multitude of royal engagements and following protocol on how to dress would make looking stylish tricky, the women of the Royal family make it look easy.

From the careful colour coordination of Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana's affinity for Peter Pan collars to Sarah Ferguson's penchant for a patterned skirt and Princess Anne's stylish headscarves, every Royal mum has had her own signature style.

While at the Spanish royal residence in 1987, with Prince Harry and Prince William, Princess Diana nailed laid back holiday dressing in a pale yellow jumpsuit and gold ballet flats.

Click through for our round up of the most stylish looks from Britain's royal mothers...

Queen Elizabeth is rarely seen without her trusty Launer bag. In the grounds of Frogmore House, the Queen paired her pale green skirt and jacket with a black purse and heels.

Princess Anne showed that a royal can look just as great in jeans and a jumper as they do in a skirt suit.

Anne matched her jeans and jumper to her patterned headscarf, with a red roll neck underneath adding a pop of colour to this tonal look.

At the Maserati Royal Charity Polo Trophy last year, Kate made the most of the heatwave and opted for a blue and white striped Zara dress. The Duchess accessorised her look with white espadrilles and a tote bag, which we later saw Prince George stash a slinky in.

Sarah Ferguson's navy and white polka dot skirt is a great, easy-to-wear piece for any occasion. Pictured here with her daughters Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, Fergie paired her ankle-length skirt with a plain white t-shirt and navy jumper worn over her shoulders.

Princess Margaret's coat with leather arms and side panels was a glamorous take on black tie dressing. We love that the buttons on her coat match her daughter's, Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones.

In the first colour photograph taken of Princess Anne in 1951, Queen Elizabeth was the perfect blend of ladylike and stylish in a pale blue dress with semi-sheer sleeves. A pearl necklace finished off her elegant look.

While taking Prince William to his first day at Eton College in 1995, Princess Diana was simple but stylish in a chic LBD and bright blue coat.

For the first day of the royal tour of Poland in 2017 Kate wore a white peplum dress from Alexander McQueen while in full mum-mode with Princess Charlotte.

Holding a 37-day-old Peter Phillips, Princess Anne wore a striped shirt dress with a matching fascinator.

Queen Elizabeth was the epitome of ladylike elegance in a pale blue jacket and dress for this family photographer. True to form, the Queen matched her burgundy shoes to the buttons and bow on her dress.

Diana was the perfect blend of chic and casual at a polo match with Prince William in 1988. The Princess wore light blue jeans and a printed top from the British Heart Foundation with a grey blazer, sports cap and brown boots.

A mere seven hours after the birth of Prince Louis, Kate proudly showed him off to the world in a red Jenny Packham dress that paid homage to Princess Diana.

After the Princess gave birth to Prince Harry in 1984 she stood on the steps of the Lindo Wing in a red coat and red and white dress.

For Princess Beatrice's first day of school Sarah Ferguson wore a navy skirt, crisp white shirt and navy coat, finishing off the look perfectly with patent black heels.

For a holiday at Balmoral Castle in 1986, Princess Diana coordinated her look with that of her sons, matching her shoes and pleated white skirt to Prince William and Harry's white jumpers and black mary-janes.

Queen Elizabeth has mastered colour coordination. Pictured here in 1965 with Prince Edward (in her arms), Prince Charles, Princess Anne and Prince Andrew, she wore a moss green skirt and jacket.

When stepping ashore from the Royal yacht Britannia, Princess Anne and children Peter and Zara wore matching tartan kilts. Anne paired hers with black ballet flats, a blazer and white shirt.

We loved the colour coordination of the Cambridges on this family outing. Kate's Prussian blue outfit, from the Duchess's go-to bespoke couturier Catherine Walker and Co, toned neatly with Princess Charlotte's dress, hair-clip and shoes, Prince George's shirt and shorts and the Duke's tie.

The oversized scalloped Peter Pan collar of Princess Diana's polka-dot dress really adds to the whimsy of her look while playing with an 11 month old Prince William. The Princess teamed her dress with deep red heels.

Sarah Ferguson dipped a toe into the white shoe trend in these block-heeled courts, which she paired with a navy cardigan, white collar and cuffs and a striped skirt in the same colours.

For an outing with her children, Viscount Linley and Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones, Princess Margaret kept warm in a large fur coat.

Kate wore a printed Tory Burch dress with frayed hem to a playgroup in New Zealand, arranged especially for eight-month-old Prince George. Never one to waste a good frock, the Duchess re-wore the dress a year later.

Whether by a happy coincidence or perfect planning, Princess Diana's red embellished jumper, skirt and shoes matched the red piping in Prince William and Harry's school uniform.
