The Duchess of York gave tips about how to spice up a marriage as she made her debut as an agony aunt on This Morning.

Sarah Ferguson, 64, told viewers of the ITV morning show she was there to answer any questions about “love and relationships and having hard times”.

Speaking to two callers during the segment, she suggested that they reignite the spark by spicing things up in the bedroom.

“Get a lovely saucy underwear department in your chest of drawers and you really make the hair, you know, blow dry the hair and take him out on a treat,” the Duchess advised.

She added: “It’s the element of surprise and it will bring the magic back into your relationship.”

The Duchess, who joined regular presenters Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary as a guest editor and co-host for Monday’s edition, described her role as being “the fluff” on the programme.

“I’ve been working with the brilliant team behind-the-scenes to bring you some of the topics I’m most passionate about,” she said ahead of the show.

“This is your show, I’m the fluff,” she told the pair after admitting she had been “terrified” to take part.

The mother-of-two also revealed that she had taught her daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, “manners for Granny” when they took tea at Windsor with the late Queen.

Speaking to her friend of 30 years, the author and former MP Gyles Brandreth, during This Morning’s View, she explained she taught “table manners Z at home and table manners A with Granny”.

“Z is you can let it just go and relax and A is you’re, you know, doing it properly,” she added.

Giggling in the corner

During the love and relationships segment, the ex-wife of the Duke of York delved into the agony aunt role when advising two women who complained of intimacy issues with their partners.

The first caller, Suzanne, told the Duchess that she and her husband were struggling to balance caring for a young child with their demanding careers, admitting that her husband felt “left out”.

After listening to the issues, the Duchess said: “The first question I have for you is do you have a friend next door or do you have a mother-in-law or your mum or someone that could just babysit or come round while you take your husband for a great surprise?

“You pop down and get a lovely saucy underwear department in your chest of drawers and you really make the hair, you know, blow dry the hair and take him out on a treat. It needs to be more treats that he’s lost for words.

“So you say to him, ‘Don’t worry tonight darling, we are gonna pop off somewhere’ and you’ve arranged the whole thing and it’s all organised.”

“It’s the element of surprise and it will bring the magic back into your relationship,” the 64-year-old added.

Suzanne thanked her for the “really good advice” before the Duchess urged her to “get that sexy underwear out” and the mother promised to oblige.

‘Lovely weekend with saucy underwear’

Meanwhile, while she was on the line to the second caller Claire, the Duchess heard how a 12-year relationship had come to a standstill because the couple had stopped doing things together like climbing and going to the gym.

“What’s his favourite place to go?” she asked the caller, adding: “You could say ‘Darling, I’ve booked your favourite place to climb, I will just be, you know, just waiting when you come back, you go climbing and when you come back we can have a lovely weekend with the saucy underwear on.’”

Explaining why she appeared as an agony aunt, the Duchess said: “I think I’ve been around the block, I’m 64, I’m a granny and I’m here, I’m really proud to be here.”

Elsewhere on the programme, she also discussed with Brandreth the King’s relationship with his grandchildren, of whom he sees three regularly.

Brandreth, 75, said: “I’ve seen the King with his grandchildren and indeed his step grandchildren and he’s very easy with them… and he loves playing with them and they love playing with him.”

“He’s such a kind man,” the Duchess chimed in, adding: “They both are the King and the Queen, and they both love their grandchildren and I love that.”

She also told Sir Cliff Richard that she was starstruck to see him, saying: “Sitting here with you, I’m lost for words, and that’s very unlike me.”
